The Netherlands is flooded with fietsen (bicycles). There are more bikes than people apparently! It is a very efficient means of transportation especially since most of the country is flat. Cyclists have priority over pedestrians and usually even automobiles. Helmets are not worn because the people feel they are unnecessary. Even children are allowed to ride the bike paths without headgear. High cyclist population is a large factor accounting to the low national obesity rate.
